Problem:
A Midwest cement plant noticed that the belt carrying clinker was mistracking on the return side, causing premature splice failures from the edge damage. When the splice failed, which happened every four to six weeks, $2500 was spent to vulcanize the belt to keep the operation running. Additionally, due to edge damage, the maintenance team would have to replace the belting at a cost of around $45,000 every 14 to 16 months.
Solution:
Because of the cement dust, the guide rollers that were being used to keep the belt out of the structure would freeze and cause excessive pressure on the belt, causing delamination and splice failures. Past belt trainers had also failed when the exposed center bearings would freeze due to the tough conditions. With this in mind, the team decided to bring in the PTEZ™ Belt Trainer from Flexco, which is ideal for use in both wet and dry conditions.
Result:
The PTEZ was installed on the clean side of the belt and results were immediate. Since the unit is sealed, its pivot and tilt technology is free to use two forces to track the belt without fear of freezing, allowing the edges to stay damage-free. The amount of splice repairs has decreased drastically and belt life has been extended greatly.
